Headache

What symptoms can present in
TMJ disorders?

Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) encompass a range of conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), muscles of mastication, and associated structures.

Common symptoms include:

  • Pain or tenderness in the jaw

  • Aching pain around the ear

  • Difficulty or discomfort while chewing

  • Clicking or popping sounds in the jaw joint

  • Jaw locking or limitation in jaw movement

  • Headache

  • Neck pain

Studies indicate that stress and bruxism (teeth grinding) are significant contributing factors, often exacerbating these symptoms. Accurate diagnosis typically involves a combination of clinical examination, patient history, and imaging techniques such as MRI or CT scans to assess the joint and surrounding tissues.
