Tooth Whitening

Sacramento, Roseville, Rocklin, Lincoln, Stockton, Modesto, California

A bright, dazzling smile never goes unnoticed. Most people could benefit from a whiter smile. Dr. Miller offers two tooth whitening options: in-office whitening and take-home kits. In-office power bleaching and at-home dentist-supervised tray bleaching are equally effective.

How whitening works

To whiten your smile, a gel or solution is administered on your teeth and left there long enough for it to soak in. Because your teeth are slightly porous, they will absorb peroxide and other bleaching agents. Once the bleach sits for long enough (usually 15 to 20 minutes is all it takes), it will penetrate to the inner part of the teeth, thereby permanently whitening them. The longer the bleach soaks, and the more often it is applied, the whiter your smile will become.

Power bleaching

In-office whitening or power bleaching takes place takes place under carefully monitored conditions which allow for the controlled and safe use of a high concentration of bleaching gel. The results of power bleaching are immediate.

With power bleaching, an extra concentration of peroxide is administered. Your teeth need to be protected from this, because if the peroxide sits on your gums for too long, it can cause discomfort. Therefore, trays are often used to your teeth and/or gums. Some advantages to in-office whitening include:

  • The fastest results compared to any other whitening procedure
  • The safest form of tooth bleaching
  • No gels and trays to fuss with at home
  • Leave the office with a gorgeous smile the same day
  • Gum and tooth sensitivity following the procedure are more controllable today, as thicker peroxide gels are now used

Take home kits

At-home kits whitening fit in to your schedule and can be used in the privacy of your home with nightly use trays. These kits still use the same professional strength gel that is used for in-office whitening.

At home you will fill the mouth trays with this tooth whitening gel and wear them at night for about two to three weeks, depending on your desired results. Take home kits offer you the ability to touch-up your stained teeth whenever you see fit.

Before your teeth can be whitened, you must undergo an examination of your teeth to ensure that you do not have any cavities or excess plaque buildup, as the whitening gel could further damage decaying teeth. If bad teeth are discovered, you teeth must be cleaned and repaired before they can be whitened.

Stains best removed from power bleaching and take-home kids include organic stains or discolorations caused by:

  • Aging
  • Consumption of certain foods (primarily coffee, red wine, sodas and dark-colored vegetables and fruits)
  • Tobacco use
