Sleep Disorders

Sacramento, Roseville, Rocklin, Lincoln, Stockton, Modesto, California

The study and evaluation of sleep disorders related to dentistry is an emerging field that concentrates on reducing your respiratory distress while you are asleep.

A widespread problem

Each year, approximately 40 million Americans suffer from some sort or sleep disorder, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Ignoring the underlying causes, or covering the symptoms with over-the-counter sleeping pills can only make the problem worse.

Untreated sleep disorders can be hazardous to your health. A British study in September of 2007 found that people who do not get enough sleep are twice as likely to die of heart disease. But with proper testing and diagnosis, most sleep disorders can be managed and overcome.

If you fit any of these descriptions, you may be suffering from a sleep disorder:

  • You have high blood pressure
  • Other complain about you snoring
  • You have ever woken up gasping for air
  • You wake up tired in the morning, even after a full night of sleep

Airway obstruction is the cause for sleep disordered breathing. Your difficulty breathing could range from mild to moderate, from snoring to the serious condition of sleep apnea.

While insomnia is the most commonly known sleep disorder, there are actually over 100 types of sleep disorders. The most common are described below.

  • Insomnia—this condition is defined by a significant lack of high-quality sleep. It can be short-term or chronic, and can be caused by a number of factors such as stress, poor nighttime habits, medical or psychiatric conditions.
  • Restless legs syndrome—this disorder causes an irresistible urge to move your legs. You may experience tingling sensations in your legs that keep you up at night. However, this condition can affect you while you are resting, or while you awake.
  • Narcolepsy—with this disorder, it is difficult to stay awake. Sudden “sleep attacks” can occur even after getting a good night’s sleep. Falling asleep during activities can be dangerous and negatively impact your personal and professional life.
  • Sleep Apnea—this disorder is defined by brief interruptions of breathing while you are sleeping. Its telltale signs are snoring at night, followed by fatigue throughout the following day. Sleep apnea is a very serious condition, as it can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure and even a stroke.

It is important to your health that your sleep disorder is properly diagnosed, and subsequently treated.
