Gum Recontouring

Sacramento, Roseville, Rocklin, Lincoln, Stockton, Modesto, California

A frame for your smile

When your gums are healthy and nicely-shaped, they complement your teeth—resulting in an attractive smile. Healthy pink gum tissue frames your smile, much like the frame of a photograph. If you find that your gums are swollen and become unsymmetrical in appearance, this detracts from the aesthetic appearance of your smile. Unhealthy gums can also lead to worsening gum conditions like gingivitis.

Healthy gums first

If you notice your gums deteriorating, the first step is to get them back into a healthy form. Before any cosmetic surgery can be performed, you must reduce the inflammation, so that your gum tissue can return to a firm and pink state. Only after this is accomplished can you assess the contours of your gum tissue, and consider how to proceed, aesthetically-speaking.

Unsymmetrical tissue is one of the most common gum problems. There are several types of asymmetry:

  • The edge of your gum tissue (gingival margins) may be lower on one tooth and not the other
  • Your gum tissue is the same level, but sits high on your teeth. This allows too much of your teeth to show, thus creating a “horse-like” smile.
  • Your gums sit too low on your teeth, exposing too much of your gingival margins. This creates a “gummy smile.”

The procedure

Depending on the severity of your gum condition, you may need only recontouring of your gum tissue to fix the problem. This cosmetic gum lift is performed using a laser and topical anesthetic. Using a laser, Dr. Miller will gently reshape your gum line by sculpting excessive and uneven tissue. The laser immediately seals your gum tissue, so you will recover quickly and with little (if any) pain.

But sometimes a recontouring procedure alone is not enough. If your condition is more severe, the bone at the front of your tooth’s root may need to be reduced. This is done because your gingival margins need to be about 3 millimeters from the edge of your bone. If Dr. Miller does not reduce the bone, your tissue will grow back the way it is now. This procedure is more invasive than a gum lift, but the pain is not intolerable when done properly.

A relatively simple cosmetic procedure, gum recontouring can make a substantial difference in your smile. When your gum tissue is symmetrically framed around your teeth, people will notice. Your smile will be more luminous and your confidence, escalated.
