General Dentistry

Sacramento, Roseville, Rocklin, Lincoln, Stockton, Modesto, California

General and restorative dentistry involves diagnosing any and all issues that relate to your smile. This includes your smile’s health and function, along with issues relating to treatment are repair, such as:

  • Infected gums or gum tissue
  • Cracked, crooked or decayed teeth
  • TMD disorders
  • Missing teeth caused by an accident or poor dental hygiene
  • Unevenly spaced teeth
  • Gums that are asymmetric; cover too much or not enough of your tooth’s enamel
  • A poor bite due to habits like thumb-sucking or tongue-thrashing

Wide-ranging expertise

A general dentist is licensed to practice all areas of dentistry. General dentists serve as the primary care provider for every patient. He or she manages their oral health care needs and coordinates treatment with other specialists when required.

By performing a complete dental exam, the general dentist can assess your overall dental health. From there he or she can tell what factors, if any, are contributing to your detrimental oral health. From there, a general dentist devises a personal treatment plan that aims to restore your oral health, including your teeth, jaw and supporting structures.

This treatment plan should address two main objectives to enable you to achieve optimum oral health:

  • It should identify all factors that have in any way contributed to the deterioration of your oral health
  • It should determine the best method of eliminating these factors

Total elimination is obviously not possible in every circumstance. Sometimes a patient’s problems are too severe for a return to complete ideal oral health. The degree by which a general dentist can eliminate these factors and the restoration the patient can subsequently undergo will determine the success.

Besides accidents, the three most common ways that adults lose their teeth include:

  • Periodontal Disease (gum and bone infections)
  • Dental Caries (tooth decay)
  • Occlusal Problems (bad bite)

Good oral hygiene at home

It is important that you practice good oral hygiene at home. Be sure to brush and floss regularly, and refrain from clenching your jaw or grinding your teeth. However, even the most rigorous oral hygiene can not prevent all problems. It is important that you schedule routine dental exams to catch problems early, should they arise.
