Dental Bridges
Sacramento, Roseville, Rocklin, Lincoln, Stockton, Modesto, California

If you are living with a missing tooth, it can not only be embarrassing, it can have significant impacts on your oral health. For example, when a tooth is lost, five or more teeth may shift. This can lead to:
- A change in your bite
- A speech impediment
- TMD disorder (temporomandibular joint disorder)
- An increased risk for tooth decay and gum disease
- Sore jaws and gums
Fixed bridge
The dental bridge procedure utilizes a false tooth (called a pontic) and fuses it between two porcelain crowns to fill in empty space. The two crowns holding the pontic in place are attached to each side of the false tooth “bridging” it in place. This particular bridge is called a “fixed bridge,” and replaces one or more missing teeth. Fixed bridges are permanent; they cannot be taken out of your mouth like removable partial dentures.
In addition to a fixed bridge, there are two other types of bridges: resin-bonded bridges and cantilever bridges.
Resin-bonded bridge
This type of bridge is used primarily for your front teeth. A resin-bonded bridge is the least expensive option, and is best used when the adjacent (called abutment) teeth are healthy and do not contain large fillings. The false tooth is fused to metal bands that are bonded to the abutment teeth with an inconspicuous resin. This type of bridge reduces the amount of preparation work required on your adjacent teeth.
Cantilever bridge
This type of bridge is used when there are teeth on just only one side of your gap. With a cantilever bridge, the false tooth must be anchored to one side, over one or more of your natural, adjacent teeth. Areas of your mouth that are under less stress, like your front teeth, can handle a cantilever bridge.
Your commitment to oral hygiene
Bridges can help correct bite problems, reduce your risk of gum disease, and allow you to speak properly. However, bridges require your commitment to good oral hygiene. If you comply, your bridge can last more than a decade.
